Prospective Undergraduates
The Department of Zoology has a primary responsibility for undergraduate and graduate instruction in fundamental aspects of animal biology, including the principles of form, function, development, and diversity produced by animal evolution. The teaching program provides a broad coverage of basic biological processes in invertebrate and vertebrate animals at the cellular, organismic, population, and community levels. Students receive background for a variety of professional positions in the public and private sector, and for graduate programs in the biological sciences including health-related fields.
There is a strong teaching and research emphasis on ecological and physiological processes in aquatic animals or ecosystems. This focus is enhanced by the geographical location of the University and the availability of facilities for aquatic research. The University’s location and facilities provide unique opportunities for the study of aquatic and terrestrial animals due to its access to the seacoast and the lakes region of New Hampshire, and the presence of two coastal marine laboratories, as well as estuarine and freshwater laboratories.
