Minors
Zoology Minor
The Zoology minor consists of five courses, one of which must be either ZOOL 412 or the sequence of BIOL 411/412 (the two course sequence would count as only one of the five courses required for the minor). The other four courses can be chosen from the following:
- Any Zoology course except ZOOL 400, ZOOL 401, ZOOL 402, or ZOOL 507/508
- General Ecology (BIOL 541), Genetics (BIOL 604), or Cell and Developmental Biology (BIOL 605)
In the case of COLSA students, two courses in the major may be used in the minor, as long as they are from the courses listed above.
Marine Biology Minor
The minor is designed to provide a foundation in marine biology and related sciences to any UNH undergraduate student with the exception of students enrolled in the MFB option of the Biology Program. It is offered through the Zoology Program. The minor consists of 20 credits with grades of C– or better and no pass/fail courses. No more than 8 major requirement credits may be used towards the minor. All courses in the program are selected in consultation with the minor adviser (contact: Dr. Larry Harris, Department of Biological Sciences).
Students should declare their intention to minor in marine biology before the end of the junior year. During the final term, students should apply to the dean to have the minor shown on their transcript.
The requirements for the minor are as follows:
- 5 courses (20 credits); 2 of the 5 courses (8 credits) can count towards the major
- Introductory course in Marine Science (select from the following list):
- ZOOL/PBIO 503 – Introduction to Marine Biology
- ESCI 501 – Introduction to Oceanography
- or Zool 674 Field Marine Science
- 4 additional courses selected in consultation with the minor advisor
- Students must maintain a C- average with a 2.0 GPA
In addition, students are encouraged to become involved in a research project, either by working in a professor’s laboratory or by participating in the Undergraduate Ocean Research Program (TECH 797).
Animal Behavior Minor
The animal behavior minor is designed for students who are interested in learning more about the mechanisms underlying the behavior of many different types of animals, as well as the reasons why certain behaviors may have evolved. Students interested in the animal behavior minor must complete a total of 20 credits of coursework (approximately 5 courses), from the list of courses below. Students must receive a grade of C- or better in each of these courses and no more than 8 major requirement credits can be counted toward the minor. If a student is interested in using a relevant course that is not included in the following list, they must seek permission from either Dr. Michelle Scott or Dr. Win Watson in the Department of Biological Sciences.
