Honors-in-Major

Students are required to maintain an overall grade-point average of 3.4 and a 3.4 in major coursework.

Students must successfully complete three 600- or 700-level honors courses in zoology or honors courses in genetics, biology, or microbiology approved by the major advisor.  Honors students will have separate assignments including written critiques of current literature or term paper(s) on biological theory or experimental techniques.  Laboratory assignments may differ from those of regular class sections.

Students must successfully complete ZOOL 799H Senior Thesis, a two-semester (2-4 cr each semester), with an IA grade given for the first semester.  No later than the beginning of the first semester, senior year, each student participating in Senior Thesis will meet with his/her faculty advisor to select a research project.  The student will present an oral proposal and a written proposal for evaluation.  During the year, the student will carry out the experimental portion of his/her research in the advisor's laboratory.  At the end of the second semester senior year, the student will submit a written thesis to the advisor.  An oral presentation may also be required.

Students accepted prior to fall 2010 are required to maintain an overall grade-point average of 3.2 and a 3.2 in major coursework.
