Graduate Student Life

Housing

Babcock House provides on-campus housing and a sense of community for full-time graduate students. Married students and students with families may apply for housing in the Forest Park apartment complex. Many students choose to share houses with other graduate students in the surrounding communities.

UNH Dining

Graduate students may choose to take their meals on a contractual basis with the University dining halls whether or not they live on campus. There are limited cooking facilities in Babcock House.

Health Services

The University has a well-equipped clinic for diagnosis and treatment of health problems. Routine medications are available from the Health Service pharmacy.

Graduate Student Support

The Department of Zoology attempts to provide a stipend and tuition waiver for all students accepted into the graduate program. Teaching assistantships are the principal means of financial aid. Students are also funded on research assistantships provided by grants awarded to faculty members. There are also University fellowships and tuition waivers that are awarded on a competitive basis.

Student Activities

The University offers students a variety of cultural and social opportunities. There are two theaters and two art galleries in the Paul Creative Arts Center. The Sidore Lecture Series presents provocative, well-known speakers each year, while the University's Celebrity Series brings leading musical, dance, and theatrical artists to the campus. University students and faculty also perform in public concerts, recitals, and theater productions.

The Memorial Union Building houses many student organizations and provides lounges, eating facilities, and recreation areas for student use. Membership in more than 100 clubs and organizations is open to graduate students.

The University has extensive varsity and intramural athletic programs. There are intramural teams for volleyball, basketball, and softball within the department. Athletic facilities include indoor and outdoor running tracks, weight rooms, fitness center, racquetball courts, a swimming pool, and indoor ice rink, and outdoor tennis courts.

Outdoor recreational opportunities are abundant in the Durham area. Hundreds of acres of University and town land provide miles of cross-country and mountain bike trails. Downhill skiing and hiking areas are a few short hours to the north, and beaches and rocky shores are ten miles from campus.

Graduate students play an active role in the operation of the department. Students serve on committees dealing with the graduate program, the zoology seminar series, and have three appointed representatives at faculty meetings.
