Related Programs of Interest
The zoology graduate program is supplemented by courses and research in other biological science departments and institutes at the University.
Center for Marine Biology
Within the Marine Program, the Center for Marine Biology brings together twenty faculty members from five academic departments, including ten zoology faculty members. Located at the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory, the center is responsible for all the marine labs. The center provides funding to support graduate research and to send graduate students to conferences.
EOS
The Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space is an interdisciplinary institute devoted to the study of the Earth and its space environment. The institute offers expertise and facilities for remote sensing of meteorology and for physical and chemical oceanography, which are relevant to several areas of biological research.
Marine Program
The University of New Hampshire Marine Program provides the infrastructure and administrative support for marine research in a number of fields, including physical and chemical oceanography, marine geosciences, ocean engineering, and marine biology. It includes the diving program, a 53-foot research vessel, and three research laboratories all accessible to faculty and students in marine disciplines.
Sea Grant
The University of New Hampshire and the University of Maine are partners in a joint Sea Grant Program for research that enhances the understanding and utilization of the marine resources of the Gulf of Maine.
Genetics
The graduate program in genetics consists of sixteen faculty members in seven departments across the campus. The program sponsors seminars and advanced coursework in genetics.
Agricultural Experiment Station
The AES is one of the largest research units at the university. It is supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and state of New Hampshire appropriations. The AES funds scientists who blend basic and applied research in ways that improve the quality of life for the people of New Hampshire. Recent projects vary from fundamental studies of cancer cells to resource management, genetic engineering, marine biology, and aquaculture.
Hubbard Center for Genome Studies
The Hubbard Center for Genome Studies was established in June 2001 to lead the development of genomics research at UNH. The HCGS will provide technical assistance by constructing BAC and cDNA libraries, providing services in high-throughput DNA sequencing, fragment analysis, and analysis of gene expression. It also will maintain expertise in biocomputing and database services to support these activities. As a founding member of the UNH Entrepreneurial Campus, the Center will engage partners outside UNH, to promote the development of the biotechnology industry in the region.
